Description

This homecoming parade proceeds south on Greensboro Avenue. Based on the "Gator" float, the date of the photo was probably Nov. 24, 1951, when Alabama met Florida in Alabama's homecoming game. Alabama lost to Florida in that game, 30-21.

Businesses shown on Greensboro Avenue, from the left are part of the McLester Hotel and Coffee Shop, Hale Insurance, T.R. Taylor Drugs, an unknown white building, then part of Black, Friedman and Winston men's wear store.

Walter B. "Fritz" Herman worked for T. R. Taylor Drugs as a teenager, making deliveries. Herman earned his pharmacy degree from Auburn University then served in the Navy as a pharmacist mate. After the war, he returned to work at T.R. Taylor Drugs as a pharmacist.

Herman became the owner of T.R. Taylor Drugs, along with his wife Mary Albright Herman. Fritz Herman was president of the Tuscaloosa Druggist Association and served as vice-president of the Alabama Pharmaceutical Association.

Fritz Herman died in an electrical accident in 1949 at the age of 41.
