The bridge was demolished in 1973 when the new Hugh Thomas Bridge was constructed. Greensboro Avenue begins at the bridge and proceeds up what was known as River Hill. The ten-story bank building is on the left at the top of the hill where Greensboro Avenue intersects with University Boulevard. Tuscaloosa Chevrolet is the large group of buildings near the river. On the right on the hill is the Burchfield Hotel. The unoccupied area on the right was the former site of Stallworth Lake and, later, the city dump. Folsom called himself "the little man's big friend." James E. "Big Jim" Folsom, Sr. was only the second person to serve two full terms as governor of Alabama, from 1947 to 1951 and from 1955 to 1959. Folsom was born on October 9, 1908 near Elba in Coffee County. He briefly attended the University of Alabama and Howard College (now Samford University). He left school in 1929 and worked as a merchant sailor, doorman at a New York theater, and boxing sparring partner. He returned to Alabama in the early 1930s and became active in politics losing his first election for a position on the state convention on prohibition. In 1936 he married Sarah Carnley with whom he had two children. He ran for and lost the election to the US Congress also in 1936. He then moved to Cullman in North Alabama. Folsom ran for governor in 1942 and placed second after Chauncey Sparks. During World War II Folsom served briefly in the U.S. Army before being released because of his height (he was 6 foot 8 inches tall). He then joined the U.S. Merchant Marine, which he left when his wife Sarah died in 1944 from complications related to pregnancy. Two years later he met Jamelle Moore during his successful campaign for governor. The two were married in 1948, and the couple had seven children. Folsom's 1946 gubernatorial victory came after running an innovative campaign on an extraordinarily tight budget. In his speeches, he emphasized populist. Folsom stood for election for governor again in 1954, the first time allowed by the 1901 Constitution. He ran against seven credible candidates and defeated them without a runoff. His oldest son, James E. "Little Jim" Folsom Jr., has been the most successful, serving as public service commissioner and lieutenant governor, and succeeding to the governorship upon the felony conviction of Governor Guy Hunt. Note lantern mounted on rear and volunteer firefighters on board. Tuscaloosa's first fire apparatus was a hand pumper named the Empress. The fire department was located on the corner of 7th Street and 25th Avenue facing north in Tuscaloosa. Title A name given to the resource Queen City Park Swimming Pool Subject The topic of the resource Swimming pools Historical markers--Tuscaloosa, Ala Schuyler, Don Buel , 1888 - 1972 Description An account of the resource Four features of the Queen City Pool in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which was dedicated in 1943, and two historical markers by the Alabama Historical Association are featured in this sketch. According to one marker: In 1926, the city of Tuscaloosa acquired 30 acres of land for a public park that would become Queen City Park. During the 1930's the Federal Works Project Administration (WPA) built a nature walk at Queen City Park. In 1943, the city of Tuscaloosa built Queen City Pool and Bath House with funds from the Warner Family's David Warner Foundation and the work was provided by the WPA. Queen City Pool's bathouse {sic} and fountain were designed in the art deco style by Tuscaloosa architect Don Buel Schuyler who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The other marker reads: Site of Queen City Park Softball Field 1936 - 1967. Built on this site in 1936, Queen City Park softball field served as the cornerstone for the first successful community effort to promote the organized play of amature {sic} softball in Tuscaloosa County. Its construction followed nationwid {sic} efforts to organize softball in 1933. Soon thereafter, Tuscaloosa Men's and women's softball teams emerged as state and national powers, and the sport itself gained recognition as true wholesome family recreation.
