Peter-Bryce had the home, which she called a "cottage" in spite of its size and spacious grounds, built on the northeast corner of 7th Street and 21st Avenue.

Peter-Bryce had young ladies for paying guests for several years, then changed to boys. Frank L.Grove, a former Tuscaloosa High School principal, and Sam F. Clabaugh, then editor of The Tuscaloosa News, lived there for six years.

In an article in a Feb. 13, 1966, issue of The Tuscaloosa News, Grove was quoted as saying, "She frequently would let Sam and me invite two young ladies for Sunday dinner. We accused her of trying to help us on to matrimony, which she frankly admitted."

Mrs. J. Reese (Sue) Phifer, Mrs. Charles (Nell) Beauchamp, Mrs. Hugh Mallory Privet and Jack Jolly Clarkson, lived in their great aunt's home during her declining years.

Ellen Peter-Bryce died on April 8, 1929 and was buried beside her husband on the Bryce Hospital grounds.
