Description
An account of the resource
The old Alabama State Capitol Building in Tuscaloosa was decorated for the wedding of Ladie Fonville and Clifton Penick. The Alabama State Capitol was located in Tuscaloosa from 1826 until 1847.

The stone foundation of the capitol was laid in 1827 and work was completed in the late fall of 1829. After the seat of government was moved to Montgomery in 1847, the Tuscaloosa Capitol and its furnishing were deeded to the University of Alabama to be used for educational purposes. In 1857, the University Board of Trustees leased the building for ninety nine years to the newly formed Baptist-affiliated Alabama Central Female College. At this time, a large brick four story dormitory was constructed at the west of the building.

The capitol building was used by the Alabama Central Female College until it was destroyed by fire on August 22, 1923 when a construction worker accidentally set it ablaze. He was soldering a piece of flashing while repairing the dome and the building caught fire. The historic building was totally destroyed by fire. In the 1930's, the site was cleared for use as a park.

Clifton Penick was a lawyer and counsel for the board of trustees at the University of Alabama. He was part of the transaction to buy the University Club. Ladie Fonville Penick was a writer and arts supporter.

On December 22, 1940, the USS Tuscaloosa embarked from the Naval Operating Base at Norfolk, VA carrying Admiral William D. Leahy (1875-1959), the newly designated Ambassador to France, and his wife Louise, for passage to Lisbon, Portugal and thence to Vichy, France. With them is Captain Lee Payne Johnson (1886-1964). They are dwarfed by a battery of the cruiser’s 8-inch guns.

Leahy served as United States Ambassador to France from 1940-42 but had limited success in keeping the Vichy government free of German control. Later he became Fleet Admiral Leahy serving as the senior-most United States military officer on active duty during World War II. He held multiple titles and was at the center of all major military decisions the United States made in World War II.

Captain Lee Payne Johnson was the third of seven Captains of the USS Tuscaloosa, serving from May 27,1940 to December 2, 1942. For his exceptionally meritorious service during World War II, he received two Legions of Merit and was appointed Commodore.

Sources: Wikipedia, Newspapers.com., Ancestry.com, MilitaryTimes.com

Description
An account of the resource

Cadets from the British Royal Air Force march to their Army training planes at Hargrove Van de Graaff Airport June 10, 1941, as they prepare to begin their instruction by pilots of the Alabama Institute of Aeronautics.

As the first contingent of students, 550 RAF cadets sailed from England to Canada in late May, 1941, and boarded trains headed for flying schools at Tuscaloosa, Arcadia, FL, Americus, GA, Jackson, MS, Lakeland, FL and Camden SC. Ranging in age from 18 to 27, about 50 came to Tuscaloosa to start a primary 10-week training course. Receiving the same course of instruction that is given to American aviation cadets, their expenses are paid for by the British government. The United States would undertake to train 8,000 British fliers annually.

On Thursday, June 12, the British cadets were formally welcomed to Tuscaloosa with a parade down University Blvd. and Greensboro Avenue where they marched with cadets of the US Air Corps. Civic leaders spoke and the cadets were guests of honor at a dance at the Tuscaloosa Country Club Saturday night. Delighted by their friendly Tuscaloosa welcome, their only concern is the Alabama heat. “By jove, it’s almost as hot as Egypt,” one of the cadets remarked.
