Text Any textual data included in the document. A Brief History of the University Law School - Its Distinguished Professors and Graduates, by Wm. C. Jemison, Class of 1873-4 The law school of the state university, as it is generally known by the members of the bar, was founded by Henderson M. Somerville prior to his going on the supreme court bench in February 1873. When attending the supreme court in December 1872, he was requested to go before the board of regents of the university, who were then in session at Montgomery, and to formulate a plan of organization for them, based on the condition of his accepting the position of dean of the school. He drew up the ordinance, which was passed by the regents at the meeting, leaving the name of the sole professor of law to be filled by the board. At that time all the members of the university faculty were receiving salaries of $2,500 each, and the regents offered Judge Somerville the same amount to take sole management of the school. Foreseeing that the enterprise must necessarily commence on a small scale and be of slow growth he went before the regents and stated that they could not, in his judgment, wisely pay so much, in view of the public prejudice that would be aroused by the per capita cost of educating the few law students who would at first attend the school, and that a high salary to begin with would imperil the success if not insure the failure of that school. He offered to undertake the responsibility if they would strike out the proposed salary of $2,500 and substitute $500. (T)his was done accordingly, and the law school of the state university today owes its existence to this act of self-denial on the part of one of her alumni. The first lecture ever delivered to the school by Judge Somerville was in the lecture room, known as the chemical laboratory, in the northwest corner of the old building. The school was organized in that room about the middle of February 1873. The first class was composed of the following: Wm. C. Jemison, Shepherd Prince (now deceased), Thos H. Wotts, Frank S. Moody and Isaac Hamilton Prince. The growth of the school was steady, the number of students increasing almost in arithmetical progression every year. Judge Somerville, in the meanwhile, continuing his connection with it until he was appointed in July 1890, to his present position on the national board of customs, in New York. Since that time he has every year lectured to some extent to the law students. Connected with his work in the school the following distinguished men have been associated with him at different periods of time: Captain John M. Martin, Hon. Burwell B. Lewis, General Sterling A.M. Wood, General Henry D. Clayton and Hon. Andrew C. Hargrove, all of whom have passed away from the sphere of earthly activity. To this galaxy of great names may be added as co-adjutators, General Richard C. Jones and Captain John D. Meeden, Adrain (Adrian) T. Vande Graff, Esq., Judge Wm L. Thorington and Ormond Somerville, Esq. come later on the list of the law faculty, the last two being now professors in the school. The university of proud of her alumi, which constitutes about one-third of the bar of the state, and fill some of the highest federal and state offices, as congressmen, chancellors, circuit, city and probate judges and legislators, including also state and local prosecuting attorneys. Among these lawyers, now scattered over a dozen states the writer has heard Judge Somerville declare with pardonable pride that there was no single one of them who was not his personal friend and that no part of his busy life was more pleasant than the hours spend with his old law students in the lecture room. Somerville held the post as dean from 1873 to 1890 and at the same time was an Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. In 1890, he was appointed by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison to the Board of Appraisers where he served as president from 1910 to 1914. His term ended when he died in 1915. Henderson is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Tuscaloosa. I remember, even though I was a tiny girl, that my daddy took me to ride on the very first trip of the dummy, which was mule drawn and driven by Bill Brandon, who later was to become Governor of Alabama. I remember our one recreation spot in my younger days was Lake Lorraine, which was located about a half mile east of Bryce Hospital station, and south of the dummy line. This was long before the Riverview Park was established. Lake Lorraine was a wonderful place to go on a Sunday afternoon. There we would watch the courting guys and gals as they rowed in the boats that were available at the lakeside. Most of the men wore sleeve holders to keep their shirt sleeves up, a derby hat, and a handle-bar mustache. The ladies usually wore black skirts, with white shirtwaists with collars so high you could understand why ladies didn't spit. Stays in these collars ran up almost to their ears. They either wore pretty merry widow hats or went bareheaded with a huge rat around the crown of the head with the hair pulled up over it. (Not too different from some of the teased styles of today). The orchestra would always play concerts at the lake on Sundays. It also played for the dances at the pavilion there. I remember how frightened I was as a child to ride the dummy over the trestle at Pinehurst and University Avenue, which spanned the huge gully running into what is now Audubon Place and see the horses and carriages or mules and wagons go down under, down one side and up the other. The library is owned by God’s House, an independent church. The library occupies a former post office on the property of the church. The 4,000-volume library was named for the librarian of Open Books, a library and bookstore formerly located in Huntsville, Alabama. <br /><br />The library contains collections intended to serve the needs of their community, such as books on a wide variety of religious topics, spiritual experiences, self-help, and LGBTQ fiction and nonfiction. Helene Loper and Rev. Susan Lowe. <br /><br />The church occupied a rented space in Northport until it moved to its current location at 2400 Main Avenue in the Holt community in November, 2004. <br /><br />The church participates in local outreach by raising funds for a free medical clinic, support for people living with HIV/AIDS, and a food pantry. The church also attends local events such as Druid City Pride and has floats in the West Alabama Christmas Parade. The Tuscaloosa Lesbian Coalition was a community-based production group formed in 1986 by Rose Gladney and Marcia Winter to support lesbian concerns and activities. The women-only social group published monthly newsletters, actively fundraised for the organization and other causes, and were dedicated to bringing popular lesbian artists and other lesbian cultural events to Tuscaloosa. TLC welcomed women of all races, ethnic background, classes, political and religious persuasions, and women who are differently abled or handicapped. TLC was an active organization in the lesbian community of Tuscaloosa that allowed for socialization and discussions of lesbian concerns and issues.
