Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) was first organized in New York at Columbia University as a youth Zionist Society, officially becoming a Greek letter fraternal organization in 1903. The original Psi chapter was colonized in Tuscaloosa with 15 men. As ZBT thrived, two additional Jewish fraternal organizations, Kappa Nu and Phi Epsilon Pi, also formed chapters on campus. Title A name given to the resource YMCA, 1105 Greensboro Avenue, Circa 1950 Subject The topic of the resource Young Men's Christian Association (Tuscaloosa, AL) Description An account of the resource In the spring of 1947 a meeting of some 200 representatives from civic clubs, churches, organizations, and interested citizens was held in the First Methodist Church to consider the proposal of the Religious Council Youth Committee. This group of citizens voted to organize a YMCA and after due procedure the Association was incorporated and a Board of Trustees elected September 9, 1947. The new YMCA became a member of the Tuscaloosa County Community Chest for 1948. In June, 1948, the property known as the Stringfellow House at 1105 Greensboro Avenue was purchased for a headquarters building. The building was in use until a new building was opened in April, 1959. The YMCA building was open daily from 9 AM to 9:30 PM for informal use in games, reading, crafts, etc. as well as club meetings. On Friday evenings special programs for Jr. High students and on Saturday evenings special programs for Sr. High were held and the building remained open until 10:30. Title A name given to the resource YMCA Unveils Warner Portraits Subject The topic of the resource Young Men's Christian Association (Tuscaloosa, AL) Warner, Herbert David, 1882-1975 Warner, Mildred Westervelt, 1893-1974 Description An account of the resource Herbert David Warner (left) and Frank Moody at the unveiling of color portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Warner at the Central Building of the YMCA on November 1, 1967. Color portraits of the couple by Alphaeus Philemon Cole, 1876-1988, a noted New York artist, were unveiled in the lobby of the Central YMCA. Frank Moody made a speech relating the years of service and the generous donations by both Warners and expressed regret that Mrs. Warner was unable to attend due to poor health. In addition to Mr. Warner other members of the family at the ceremonies were Mildred Van Zele, granddaughter, and Jack Warner, son. Warner spoke briefly for himself and his wife and said that they were thankful they were able to do the things they had for the community to show their appreciation of the good life shared in Tuscaloosa. He recalled the sadness they experienced when a teen-age son died in a tragic accident while on a YMCA outing and indicated this led to the donation of funds in memorial to him. Warner for their support of the YMCA. The Warners, either personally or through the David Warner Foundation, contributed about $600,000 to the YMCA. The most recent contribution made it possible to pay off the capital indebtedness on the YMCA property and facilities.
