Description
An account of the resource
This simple, one-story Gothic style house was built in the 1870s when Alabama was still under a Reconstruction government and attempting to overcome the aftermath of the Civil War. It was the first new structure built in Tuscaloosa after the war.
The house was located at 903 Greensboro Avenue at 9th Street. Built by Newbern Hobbs Browne, in the shape of a cross, the house faced the street and featured a deep bay window below the gable of the roof. This bay window has three windows, each with a raised paneled section below, Gothic molding around the sides, and a paneled cornice with supporting brackets. Porches extended on both sides, each decorated with millwork arches between the delicate columns. An interesting balustrade ties the columns together, and the porch is crowned by the bracketed, paneled cornice of the bay window.
A highly significant example of Victorian architecture, this cottage has been untouched by time for over a century and is a reflection of 19th century life.
The house was given to the Tuscaloosa County Historical Preservation Authority on Jan. 5, 1978. The structure had to be moved to make room for Central Bank. It was moved to 2902 6th Street near the Capitol School on land donated by the Pettus Randall family. It is used for offices and classrooms for the Capitol School.
The builder of the house, Newbern Hobbs Browne, was born in Georgia in 1824 and died in Tluscaloosa in 1891. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1846 and entered law practice in Tuscaloosa.
From 1851-1853, he edited the Tuscaloosa Observer, a strong democratic newspaper.
In 1862, he enlisted as a private in Lumsden's Battery of the Confederate army where he served for two years until forced to retire because of ill health. He rejoined the battery and served until the end of the war.
Browne was a four-term state representative (1853-1859 and 1873) and served as Probate Judge for Tuscaloosa County from 1874 until his death.
He married Mary Eliza Prude in 1874 and they had five daughters and one son. The son left Tuscaloosa at an early age to work on newspapers in Illinois. (Some material from Past Horizons, Tuscaloosa Historic Preservation Society, 1978)

Description
An account of the resource
The Old Buck Boarding House, located at 1816 Broad Street (now University Boulevard) in Tuscaloosa just west of Queen City Avenue, was built around 1820. Ownership of the house changed many times over the years, but the Buck family owned it for many years. Records show it was deeded to Nellie Buck Morris in 1926. The house provided boarding for state dignitaries when Tuscaloosa was the state capitol and was later used for apartments.
Originally, it was a handsome, elegant mansion with beautiful draperies and antiques from abroad.
The house was demolished in 1950 and the lot was sold to Owen Meredith and sons. The slave house still stands at the site of the house.

The C.C. Kilgore House was built in 1869 or 1870 by Bryce Hospital for Captain C.C. Kilgore. Captain Kilgore was the first engineer for the hospital. The house was one of Tuscaloosa's only notable Reconstruction-era houses. In 1976 the house was acquired by the University of Alabama in a property trade and housed the University's Center for the Study of Southern History and Culture and the Alabama Review office. In 2013 after the University of Alabama was unable to locate a buyer for the house, it was torn down.

Description
An account of the resource
This house, formerly known as the Carson-Mayfield-Sutley House, is located at 610 36th Avenue and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Described in "Past Horizons," Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society, 1978:
The house has an unusually beautiful portico. The fluted columns are quite tall and slender and thus give the house a delicate beauty. There is a small balcony above the entrance which is in perfect proportion to the slender columns. The first structure was of hand-hewn logs. Captain Thomas Lynch Carson enlarged the house in 1826 to the graceful proportions it has today. Four large, square rooms, up and down stairs, are divided by front and rear halls running through the center of the house. Long verandas span the width of the house on both floors across the back. Lovely mantels, wide molding around the doorways and a graceful stairway are charming features of the interior.
Thomas Lynch Carson married Sarah Marr, on whose family property the University of Alabama now stands. After Mr. Carson's death, she married Capt. George Cox, who came from Huntsville in 1819, bringing his goods in wagons.
For many years Judge J. J. Mayfield lived in the house.
L.P. Sutley owned the house in 1978 when "Past Horizons" was published by the Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society.

Description
An account of the resource
The Cedarwood House was built in 1818 by Joseph Blodgett Stickney. This house represents a typical Alabama house of the early nineteenth century with steeply pitched gable roof additions and flanking vernacular Greek Revival wings of New England origins. Stickney, who came from Boston, purchased the property in 1817 from General Desonette Le Gabre and farmed it until his death in 1846. The house is in deteriorated condition and is expected to be moved to a new location and restored by Edward P. Whatley, Jr., a descendant of Stickney.
Whatley told Tuscaloosa News reporter Tommy Stevenson in 2009, “Not only is this house one of the last of its kind, it is also the oldest house in Alabama to still be in the family of the original builder.” Whatley’s great-great-great-grandfather, one of the first plantation owners in the Black Belt, built the first part of the house in 1818. He had thirteen children, and Whatley said you could almost match the additions to the house to the additions in the family. Bob Gamble, of the Alabama Historical Commission, said the oldest documented house in Alabama dates back to 1814 and is located in Huntsville, near where the first settlers came down the Tennessee River on flatboats. “There are a handful of other brick houses in Huntsville that were built around 1818, but the oldest house in Tuscaloosa is from 1823. So Cedarwood is remarkable not only for its age, but for the part of the state it is in.”
