Description
An account of the resource
The Old Buck Boarding House, located at 1816 Broad Street (now University Boulevard) in Tuscaloosa just west of Queen City Avenue, was built around 1820. Ownership of the house changed many times over the years, but the Buck family owned it for many years. Records show it was deeded to Nellie Buck Morris in 1926. The house provided boarding for state dignitaries when Tuscaloosa was the state capitol and was later used for apartments.
Originally, it was a handsome, elegant mansion with beautiful draperies and antiques from abroad.
The house was demolished in 1950 and the lot was sold to Owen Meredith and sons. The slave house still stands at the site of the house.

Description
An account of the resource
A photograph of the University Club when it was the private home of Lebron and Minnie Deal.
The University Club, sometimes referred to as the "Governor's Mansion", was built in 1834 by Captain James Dearing who piloted the first steamboat from Mobile to Tuscaloosa. The house went through many owners in the 1800s, one of which was Arthur P. Bagby, governor of Alabama from 1837-1841. In 1944, the University of Alabama acquired the house, donated by the Warner family, as a social center for faculty and staff.
The original house had the same general appearance it has today, although it had no sun porch on the south side, and in the center of the roof was a square platform from which the smoke of the river boats could be seen as they approached the town bringing supplies from Mobile. The kitchen stood on the north side separate from the house, but connected by a covered walk to the north porch.
The architecture is 18th and 19th century and the style is Greek Revival "Peripteral Mode."

Description
An account of the resource
The house known as the Wallace-Ozment House was built on Greensboro Avenue in 1830 by Dr. John Wallace. The house was a raised cottage with the first floor of brick and the second of wood. In 1870, William Henry and Elizabeth Ann Jenkins Hays occupied the house. In 1881 the Ozment family (Thomas Jefferson Ozment, 1838-1916, and Martha Jane Bailey Ozment, 1848-1944) occupied the house for 63 years. Mr. Ozment died in 1916, but Mrs. Ozment continued to occupy the house until her death in 1944. At that date, the house was sold and turned into apartments. The wide front steps were changed to accommodate two entrances. The house was demolished and a Texaco station was built on the site at an unknown date.

Battle-deGraffenried House, 1217 Greensboro Avenue

Houses and homes
Description
An account of the resource
In 1962, this landmark antebellum home on Greensboro Avenue was razed. The house, known as the deGraffenried House (or the Hester- deGraffenried House), was constructed in 1845 as a wedding gift.
Located at 1217 Greensboro Avenue on the northwest corner at 14th Street, the two-story home was owned by James Whigham. The house was being razed to make room for a 40-unit Travelodge Motel to be built.
The masonry and hand-made brick house was built by Albert Battle, a pioneer Tuscaloosa merchant and planter, as a wedding gift for his son, Dr. William Battle. The Battles left Tuscaloosa just before the Civil War and sold the house to Dr. William Hester for $5,000. After Dr. Hester’s death, the property went to Judge Henry Bacon Foster, who married a daughter of Dr. Hester. The house stayed in the Foster family until Judge Edward deGraffenried purchased it about 1912.
About 1945, the house was purchased by Ernest Friday who sold it to Whigham in 1947. Whigham remodeled and repaired the house. In 1962, Whigham sold the house to the Travelodge Corporation of El Cajon, California.
Whigham described the house as having four 20-foot-by-20-foot rooms with 14-foot ceilings on the first floor. A 12-foot wide hallway extended through the house one way and a 10-foot wide hallway ran across the house. The second floor had four rooms, a hallway and two baths. There was a 14-by-14-foot room on the outside which held a circular staircase that led to a cupola on the roof. Ornamental iron grillwork surrounded the first floor porch. Floors were of heart long leaf yellow pine planks which were dressed by hand. The tongue and grooves in the flooring were also made by hand tools.
When the house was constructed in 1845, it was in the extreme southern part of the city.

Stillman College (Tuscaloosa, Ala.)
Description
An account of the resource
The Cochrane House and 20 acres of land on 15th Street in West Tuscaloosa were purchased as a new home for Stillman Institute in 1898. Founded as Tuscaloosa Institute, the name was changed in honor of its founder, Dr. Charles A. Stillman. It was renamed Stillman College in 1948.
The Cochrane house sat on the present grounds of Stillman College between Batchelor Hall and Birthright Alumni Hall. The Cochrane House was the main building on campus for many years and was used by the college for student housing for a time. It was demolished in the 1950s because of its poor state of repair.
The marble columns from the house grace the facade of Stillman College's Sheppard Library.

Description
An account of the resource
This house, built in 1849 and demolished in 1907, was located on the site the Tuscaloosa County Court House that was completed in 1908. There was electricity at this time; see the pole in front of the house. However, the streets are still unpaved.
.
The barn to the right became the site of the County Jail. The house to the left, the E.N.C. Snow House, built around 1830, and located at 2414 8th Street, was demolished in 1958 to make way for the construction of the new Tuscaloosa County Court House that opened in 1964.
The high board fence in the rear was said to be peppered with the bullets of the Federal soldiers on April 3, 1865.
