Title A name given to the resource Main Street, Gordo, AL Description An account of the resource Main Street In Gordo, AL, with its unpaved Main Street and with electric poles running down the middle of the street. The Mobile and Ohio Railroad is shown in the foreground. Settlement of the town of Gordo, located on U.S. Hwy 82, 23 miles west of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in east-central Pickens County, began before 1847. A web site, www.postalhistory.com, reports a post office in Gordo at that time. A sawmill had opened in the area in 1831. Before the Mobile and Ohio Railroad came in 1898, Gordo was called the Crossroads settlement and was located on the stage line, a mile northeast of the city’s present location, at the intersection of the Columbus-Tuscaloosa and Fayette-Vienna Roads. In Spanish, Gordo means fat or abundant. Speculation is that the city was named for the famous battle of Cerro-Gordo fought near Mexico City during the Mexican-American War in 1847. Cities and counties in Iowa, North Carolina and Illinois are also named after that battle. On April 5, 1865, Union Captain William A. Southerland of Croxton’s Army and 75 men left Tuscaloosa on the Columbus Road. Southerland’s official report mentioned going through Gordo, where he met no opposition, and continued to Carrollton where the courthouse was burned. With the railroad a reality in 1898, businesses developed near the railroad and the town moved south. On March 7, 1901, a fire broke out that destroyed several businesses before the fire could be brought under control. The town was incorporated around 1900. The first mayor was John J. Windham. By 1905, Gordo had grown enough to support six businesses; by 1913, that number had increased to around 30. A new brick schoolhouse was built in 1911, and by 1913, the town had a telephone system, a bank, a bottling works, and two cotton gins. An elementary school was built in 1936. The 2010 census showed the population of Gordo to be 1714, up from 1677 in the 2000 census. The present mayor is Craig Patterson. There was a spring, called Johnny Woods Spring, located just a few blocks from the hotel and during the 1920s and 1930s, people would come to stay at the hotel just to visit the spring and drink the water. The hotel was noted for its fine food served buffet-style on a large lazy-susan table. The table had been sold and was, in 1966, being used at a beach house on the Gulf Coast. Benjamin F. Roper built the hotel, naming it the Phoenix because it arose from the ashes of the Roper house which had burned. A livery stable was built beside the hotel. Roper operated both the hotel and the livery stable for 12 years. During the Civil War, Northern troops burned the courthouse, but spared the hotel and enjoyed the lodging there. Olivia B. Sullivan purchased the hotel in 1945 and ran it until the early 1960s. The hotel was typical of antebellum buildings with square nails and wooden pegs used in construction and much of the lumber hand-hewn heart pine lumber. The theater was a gathering place for teens and others from around Pickens County since, at times, there were no other theaters in the county. It also provided jobs for teenagers running the projectors and selling popcorn. Title A name given to the resource Pickensville (AL) Historic Marker Subject The topic of the resource Historic Towns - Alabama Description An account of the resource This historic marker for Pickensville was erected by the Alabama Tourism Department and the town of Pickensville in front of the Pickensville Town Hall. Erected in July 2010, the marker reads: In 1817, two years before Alabama became a state, a white man named Josiah Tilley came into the Tombigbee area which was inhabited by Indians. In 1820, the Town of Pickensville was established and named for Civil War General Andrew Pickens of South Caroling. Pickensville (located in West Central Alabama) became a booming town. There were large riverboats entering its ports delivering goods and picking up passengers traveling to Mobile, Alabama. In 1870, after the water transportation slowed, the M&O Railroad came with passenger and freight trains. There was ferry boat transportation back and forth across the Tenn-Tom River to Noxubee County, MS. It operated from 1879 to 1979. Two of its operators were war veteran Raleigh Ryan and Hezekiah Grice, both of Pickensville. There were schools, businesses, doctor's offices and churches. The Methodist Church, the oldest building in Pickensville, was founded in 1821. It was used as a hospital for the Confederate soldiers. Blacks and whites worshiped there together. The Stage Coach Inn, built in 1830, served as a stop for stage coaches traveling between Columbus, Mississippi, and Eutaw, Alabama. Pickensville First Baptist Church was founded in 1847. BB Chapel Methodist Church was founded in 1877 and St. John Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1885. The Rosenwald School (the only school left and currently serving as Pickensville Community Center) was founded in1925 by philanthropist and founder of Sears & Roebuck, Julius Rosenwald of Chicago, and Booker T. Washington of Tuskegee. Pickensville is the oldest town in Pickens County and was the first county seat. Its first mayor, a riverboat captain named Newell, died in 1843. The plaque reads: The school was erected in 1925 and sits on three acres donated by two community citizens, Nunnie and Jennie Stinson, parents of Yeuma Stinson-Gillis. Some educators were: A.B. Bonner, Nora Spencer, Dotha Will Moss, Annie Sherrod, Zora Wright-Stanzel, Laura W. Prude, Yeuma Stinson-Gillis (substitute teacher), and Bernard Jackson. Lunchroom cooks were Johnnie D. Harkins and Yeuma Stinson-Gillis. Booker T. Washington, Principal of the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University) developed the Rosenwald School program with funding from Julius Rosenwald, CEO of Sears & Roebuck, to improve the quality of public education for African Americans. They constructed over 5,300 schools in rural areas of 15 southern states including 389 in Alabama. This school is the only one of the six Rosenwald School buildings constructed in Pickens County found to be still standing so far. It educated generations of children until it closed in the mid-1960s. Listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on December 16, 2010.
