Whilldin, D.O. (David Oliver) 1881-1970
Description
An account of the resource
The previous city hall on this same site came down in 1936, and a new city hall was built under the Public Works Administration for a cost of $200,000. The building housed city offices and meeting rooms, an auditorium/movie theater, a barbershop, and a drugstore. The building was designed by architect D.O. Whilldin.
The theatre initially was leased to the Bama Theatre Company for a period of twenty years. On the afternoon of April 12, 1938, a parade led by the Million Dollar Band started at the university and marched to the Bama, where a PWA officials presented the keys to the building to Mayor Luther Davis. Mr. Davis was also a pharmacist who occupied the drugstore in the building for many years.
The marquee, sporting banners announcing the grand opening, advertises the movie “Hawaii Calls” with child actor Bobby Breen and Ned Sparks.

This is the interior of the Bama Theatre, designed in 1938 by architect D.O. Whilldon. "The house of the theatre is actually a reproduction of the courtyard of the Davanzati Palace of Florence, Italy with the orchestra and balcony sections decorated as a Spanish courtyard, complete with balconies and ironwork. The murals on the acoustical panels, painted by Italian-born scenic designer Navino Nataloni, and the twinkling stars and clouds on the night sky ceiling complete the open-air feel of the performance hall. The Theatre was converted to a performing arts center in 1976 and was completely renovated for live theatrical use." The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa

The marquee of the Bama Theatre as it looked in 1976.

Description
An account of the resource
This Druid Theater advertising actors Ann Margaret, and Dick Van Dyke starring in the movie "Bye Bye Birdie" was the second Druid Theater, It built in the early '60's and was located on University Blvd across from the new Embassy Suites, now a parking lot. You can see the old ABC Store in the background on the corner of Lurleen North and University.
There was an ugly incident at this Druid Theater on July 9, 1964. Renowned actor Jack Palance was at the theater with his wife and family, when a rumor spread that he was there to support the new policy of integration at the theater. A crowd of between 600-1,000 ensued with a near riot. Bricks were thrown through the windows and fire hoses dispersed the crowd. No one was injured and Palance was given a police escort to his hotel. He denied any involvement with the new theater policy, and said he simply wanted to go to the movies while visiting his wife's aunt in Northport.
