Fraternal organizations--United States
Description
An account of the resource
A marker erected by the Alabama Historical Association marks the site of the Psi chapter of Zeta Beta Tau , the first Jewish fraternity on the University of Alabama campus.
Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) was first organized in New York at Columbia University as a youth Zionist Society, officially becoming a Greek letter fraternal organization in 1903.
The original Psi chapter was colonized in Tuscaloosa with 15 men. As ZBT thrived, two additional Jewish fraternal organizations, Kappa Nu and Phi Epsilon Pi, also formed chapters on campus. Ultimately both merged into ZBT at the national and local levels. No longer an exclusive Jewish fraternity, ZBT has been open since 1954 to "All Men of Good Character" who understand and appreciate its mission and founding purpose.
The historic marker was erected on the occasion of Zeta Beta Tau's Centennial at the University of Alabama campus, March 2016, on Jefferson Avenue in Tuscaloosa.

Shown in the photo on the front row: Harold Drew, Frank W. Thomas, Paul Burnum, and J.B. Whitworth. On the back row are assistants John Cain, Carney Laslie, Joe Sharpe and Bob Clark.
Coach Frank W. Thomas received his football training under Knute Rockne at Notre Dame, where he played quarterback. Thomas served as head football coach at the University of Chattanooga, then came to Alabama in 1931 to replace Wallace Wade, who resigned. At Alabama, between 1931 and 1946, Thomas’ teams won 155, lost only 24 and tied 7 games. His teams won two national championships and four Southeastern Conference titles.
Assisting Thomas in 1934 were Athletic Director Hank Crisp, basketball coach and the man responsible for the Tide’s great forward wall (not in photograph); Harold Drew, J.B. Whitworth, baseball coach and instructor of guards and Paul Burnum, whose ability to get the first-year men ready for varsity competition was widely known. John Cain, Joe Sharpe and Carney Laslie rendered invaluable aid as individual instructors of the backs, centers and tackles respectively. Bob Clark was assisting Coach Drew with the 1934 track squad.
Harold D. “Red” Drew developed the ends in the Crimson Tide football team while building strong track teams. He followed Frank Thomas as head football coach from 1947 to 1954, attaining a record of 55-28-7. His teams attended the Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl and won the Orange Bowl. His 1953 team were Southeastern Conference champions. Drew also coached track and field teams for 23 seasons, retiring in 1965.
J.B. (Jennings Bryan) “Ears” Whitworth was an Alabama graduate and played tackle for the Crimson Tide. He was assistant coach at Alabama (coaching baseball at Alabama from 1933 to 1934), Louisiana State University and the University of Georgia prior to becoming head coach at Alabama, following Harold “Red” Drew. He served as head coach from 1955-1957 with a 14-game losing streak in 1956. Whitworth was fired in 1957 and replaced by Paul W. “Bear” Bryant.
Paul Burnam was the coach of multiple sports at the University of Alabama, having served as head coach of basketball and baseball teams and as an assistant for the football team. Burnam was head football coach at Tuscaloosa High School where he led the Black Bears to an undefeated record, five state championships and two national championships during his five-year tenure there.

Athletic directors--Alabama
University of Alabama
Description
An account of the resource
Mal Moore, athletic director at the University of Alabama, sits at his desk that overlooks the football practice field in September, 2011.
Moore grew up on a small farm in Dozier, a little town in Crenshaw County, Alabama, next to the youngest of seven children.
In tiny Dozier High School he played all three sports that were offered: football, baseball and basketball. A high school quarterback, Moore was recruited by Alabama, Auburn and Georgia; he chose Alabama. Also new on campus in 1958 when Moore came to Alabama was first-year head football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
The 1961 team won the national championship, the first of eight national titles Moore would be a part of as a player, coach or athletic director.
As his college career drew to a close, Moore wanted to coach. Bryant put him in touch with Jim Sweeney, recently named the Montana State University head coach. Sweeney needed a defensive backs coach and would welcome a former Alabama player to his staff.
Moore returned to Tuscaloosa in 1964 as a graduate assistant on Bryant's staff and would spend 19 years with Bryant, first coaching defensive backs, then quarterbacks and finally serving eight years as offensive coordinator.
When Bryant retired, Moore joined the staff at Notre Dame. Gene Stallings, new head coach of the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals, hired him away from Notre Dame to coach tight ends and receivers.
Moore returned to college football at Alabama when Stallings became the head coach. Moore was the offensive coordinator when the 1990 team won another national title. His coaching days ended when his beloved wife Charlotte was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He couldn't coach and give her the attention she needed. Gene Stallings and then-athletic director Hootie Ingram helped him make the transition to administration. His skills were a good fit for the job.
During his tenure, Bryant-Denny Stadium would be enhanced and enlarged and Moore oversaw more than $200,000 million of capital improvements to Alabama athletic facilities.
Moore resigned on March 20, 2013, and died ten days later at age 73.
Dr. Robert Witt, former president of the University of Alabama, called Moore "the most successful and admired athletic director in the history of the university." (Information from Tuscaloosa magazine and The Tuscaloosa News)

Description
An account of the resource

A Brief History of the University Law School - Its Distinguished Professors and Graduates, by Wm. C. Jemison, Class of 1873-4
The law school of the state university, as it is generally known by the members of the bar, was founded by Henderson M. Somerville prior to his going on the supreme court bench in February 1873. When attending the supreme court in December 1872, he was requested to go before the board of regents of the university, who were then in session at Montgomery, and to formulate a plan of organization for them, based on the condition of his accepting the position of dean of the school. He drew up the ordinance, which was passed by the regents at the meeting, leaving the name of the sole professor of law to be filled by the board. At that time all the members of the university faculty were receiving salaries of $2,500 each, and the regents offered Judge Somerville the same amount to take sole management of the school. Foreseeing that the enterprise must necessarily commence on a small scale and be of slow growth he went before the regents and stated that they could not, in his judgment, wisely pay so much, in view of the public prejudice that would be aroused by the per capita cost of educating the few law students who would at first attend the school, and that a high salary to begin with would imperil the success if not insure the failure of that school. He offered to undertake the responsibility if they would strike out the proposed salary of $2,500 and substitute $500. (T)his was done accordingly, and the law school of the state university today owes its existence to this act of self-denial on the part of one of her alumni.
The first lecture ever delivered to the school by Judge Somerville was in the lecture room, known as the chemical laboratory, in the northwest corner of the old building. The school was organized in that room about the middle of February 1873. The first class was composed of the following: Wm. C. Jemison, Shepherd Prince (now deceased), Thos H. Wotts, Frank S. Moody and Isaac Hamilton Prince.
The growth of the school was steady, the number of students increasing almost in arithmetical progression every year. Judge Somerville, in the meanwhile, continuing his connection with it until he was appointed in July 1890, to his present position on the national board of customs, in New York. Since that time he has every year lectured to some extent to the law students. Connected with his work in the school the following distinguished men have been associated with him at different periods of time: Captain John M. Martin, Hon. Burwell B. Lewis, General Sterling A.M. Wood, General Henry D. Clayton and Hon. Andrew C. Hargrove, all of whom have passed away from the sphere of earthly activity. To this galaxy of great names may be added as co-adjutators, General Richard C. Jones and Captain John D. Meeden, Adrain (Adrian) T. Vande Graff, Esq., Judge Wm L. Thorington and Ormond Somerville, Esq. come later on the list of the law faculty, the last two being now professors in the school.
The university of proud of her alumi, which constitutes about one-third of the bar of the state, and fill some of the highest federal and state offices, as congressmen, chancellors, circuit, city and probate judges and legislators, including also state and local prosecuting attorneys. Among these lawyers, now scattered over a dozen states the writer has heard Judge Somerville declare with pardonable pride that there was no single one of them who was not his personal friend and that no part of his busy life was more pleasant than the hours spend with his old law students in the lecture room.
