Arnold was a professor of music at the University of Alabama from 1938 to 1948. Arnold married Joan Warner in 1948 and they moved to California.

In 1951, the Warner Family gave the YMCA a tract of land including this house and 15 acres on Keen Mill Road. The property is called Y’s Acres, and is used in the summer as a day camp area.

After the land was given to the YMCA the house was occupied by Colquitt Clark, General Secretary of the Y, and his family. When Clark left the area in 1956, the house was occupied by R. Lee Johnston who succeeded him as General Secretary and the Johnston family.

<text>"A dream come true" is certainly a cliché, but the words of that phrase are repeated nevertheless by the staff members of the Friedman Library as they describe the library building nearing completion on River Road.

Taken on their first tour of the two-story building, located adjacent to Queen City Park, library staff members couldn't help but contrast the new library building with the ante-bellum home on Greensboro Avenue where the library is now located.

Gone are the cramped, multi-flight stacks crowded into the historic three-story home. Gone is the bathroom which was converted into a storage area for some of the library materials.

Gone is the old Bookmobile which was parked adjacent to the Friedman Home and converted into the facility serving the blind and physically handicapped.

Scaffolding may still surround the stairwell leading to the second floor stacks and work area, and the carpet may still be in giant rolls rather than spread on the floor of the new building but library staff members can already see what it's going to be like to have the space and facilities to work with, to have an area designed specifically for a children's reading room and to have a facility that is barrier-free for the physically handicapped.

The dream, which at times has been more of a nightmare, is ahead of construction schedule as Bryce Building Co. continues work. But that doesn't mean the facility will be in use that much sooner.

Even though the $2-million-plus building could be completed as early as March 15, it is unlikely that the new facility will be opened before early July.

Tom Shumaker, president of the library board and for more than 10 years the leader of the drive for a new building, has mentioned July 4 as an appropriate opening date because the building was one of Tuscaloosa County's Bicentennial projects.

The hold-up on the opening of the new library is just one of a number of problems which have plagued library supporters seeking a new building.

The first major problem was a lack of funds for a new building; a special referendum overwhelmingly approved by the voters provide for up to $2 million in bonds to be sold to cover the cost.

Then came problems over the location, with several of the county commissioners opposing the location on River Road, donated by the Tuscaloosa City Commission.

Once the location was chosen and bids awarded for construction of the building, structural foundation problems were discovered, forcing the need for an additional $75,000 in building costs.

Construction continued, but when it came time to award a contract on the furnishings for the library, county commissioners refused to sign the contract, citing financial problems.

Even though the contract should have been awarded in October for the custom-built library furniture to be ready by the time the building is complete, problems over the contract were not resolved for months and a contract wasn't signed until December.

Mrs. Bessie Sasser, Friedman librarian, explained that because approximately half of the furnishings for the new library are custom-built library furniture, the opening will be further delayed.

She said she expects the card catalogues, library tables, dictionary stands, index stands, library desks and chairs to be ready during the first two weeks of June.

And once the basic furnishings arrive, then will come the mammoth process of moving the film strips, phonograph records, magazines, 120,000 volumes and other items.

Citing the magnitude of the move, Mrs. Sasser said she met with representatives of the Friends of the Library this week to plan ahead.

In the meantime, the library board is trying to resolve another problem - in order to secure a contract on the furniture for the new building, the library board members had to take on the cost of the furniture.

Still to be raised by library board members is an estimated $70,000 cost of the furniture. And operational costs are still questionable, once the new facility is open.

Shumaker, however, says he is confident that the community is so strongly behind the new library that funds for the remainder of the furniture and additional operational expenses will be forthcoming.

In 1955, the house then owned by the Burchfields was purchased by the YMCA for $70,000. In a prearranged agreement, it was then exchanged with Mr. Victor Hugo Friedman for the north half of the block containing the Battle-Friedman House. The YMCA used that property as the site for the new central YMCA building. Mr. Friedman gave the Burchfield property to Tuscaloosa County for use as a public library. The library which moved from the Searcy House, 815 Greensboro Avenue, in 1958, was known as the Friedman Library to honor Mr. Friedman’s generosity. Before moving to the Searcy House in 1926, the library was housed in the basement of the County Courthouse beginning in 1921.

A new and larger public library was built on River Road (now Jack Warner Parkway) opening in 1979.</text>

              <text>
Clubs and Library Board Are Vital Factors in Growth From Original Unit

The dream of a library for Tuscaloosa county has been realized. This is through the able leadership of the Up-to-Date Club, the library board of directors, our enthusiastic librarian, Mrs. Lucy C. Pou, the Quaker Club, and other clubs of the city. The library board is composed of the following well-known Tuscaloosa women, Mrs. Alston Fitts, chairman, Mrs. Washington Moody, Mrs. Edgar Clarkson, Mrs. George J. Davis, and Miss Clara Verner.

400 Books at Beginning

In 1911 the library board appeared before the County Board of Revenue under Judge Brandon and secured the promise of a maintenance fund of $25 monthly, and the use of a room in the basement of the court house, provided there were 400 books on the shelves at the opening. The women of the Up-to-Date club had the walls decorated, funished the shelves, and the members of this club acted as librarian for the first two years. A collection of books previously housed at the Chamber of Commerce was moved to the library, and later Miss Barnes served as librarian until she was succeeded by Mrs. Pou in 1922.

During 1926 through the influernce and work of Mrs. Richard Prowell, representing all the clubs the county bought the old Searcy home on Greensboro avenue and moved the library there.

Again the Up-to-Date club decorated the walls and refinished the floors, and the maintenance fund was increased to $75. Realizing the need of equipment for the library's more spacious quarters, "Library Week" was inaugurated and has become an annual affair, with the public and all clubs participating.

The Up-to-Date Club has given a real librarian's desk costing $150, a beautiful mahogany table, $50 in cash, the new International encyclopedia and this year a table for the children's room. This table is to have a great number of pepole of all and pictures of historical value, which may be changed from time to time.

Quakers Aid Much

The Quaker Club furnished the first children's room, and later gave several collections of books, including Barrie, Conrad, and southern literature. They also gave two chairs, and only last week sponsored a benefit bridge party in order to increase their contribution.
</text>

<text>Although hardhats are not the usual attire for librarians, Bessie Sasser doesn't mind donning one for the occasion.

The occasion is a look at her dream - a modern, new library for Tuscaloosa County - at the halfway point of construction.

The nearly $2 million facility on River Road - long the subject of controversy and abortive attempts at funding - stands half-finished, its concrete columns crisscrossed by a network of orange and yellow scaffolding.

Architect Charles Ralston is shooting for an April 15 completion date, and Friedman Library head librarian Mrs. Sasser; Marjorie Meredith of the Friedman Library Board; Frances Ralston, the official decorator; and advisor Maxie Mitchell are holding him to it.

Fabric colors have been selected and approved, lounge furniture and stacks chosen and planned, and selection of furniture for the entire two-floor structure is being completed.

"We're trying to time the furniture so that it all comes in at the same time," Mrs. Sasser said. "We want to move in as they move out."

But when Brice Construction Co. of Birmingham moves out and the library is ready for Mrs. Sasser and her staff, there is yet another problem said Ruth Waldrop, chairman of the Program in School Librarianship and Media Service at the University of Alabama, and vice president of Friends of the Library.

That problem is moving, for which no funds have been allotted in the library's budget.

The county-wide library support group, under the leadership of University law professor Charles Trost, with the help of former president Martha Millar Williams, is trying to raise the funds required to move the books and equipment into the facility, said Mrs. Waldrop.

"We're planning on working with the library on moving. They don't have the money, so we're probably going to raise the money to move, " Mrs. Williams said.

The group, which also promotes the library through other activities and gives the library an expensive gift each year, raises money for this and other projects through donations and memorials.

"You just wouldn't believe the people that put their $2 or $5 or $10 on the line because they believe in the library." Mrs. Williams said.

Mrs. Sasser admits to knowing the library plans by heart. Her favorite aspect of the structure is its openness, she said.

A vertical, central open space in the building, from bottom to skylight, allows a view of portions of the upper floor from downstairs.

The circulation desk and work area will be to the left of the main door, which faces River Road. Beyond this office, adult browsing and periodical areas will be located.

Reference and young adult libraries will be toward the back and left of the first floor, with local history and genealogy occupying a room of there own.

To the right of the front door will be children's libraries, story hour room, parents' waiting area, and an entrance with portico and stairs leading up to the community room on the second floor.

Adjacent to a suite of offices at the back of the first floor will be a special garage for the bookmobile, where it will be loaded and unloaded and all incoming books, both new and old, will be processed.

Work areas, staff room, bathrooms, bookkeeper's office and librarian's offices will be against the back wall of the building.

The librarian's office, like the circulation office and local history room, will be glass-walled to facilitate better supervision of employees and to allow the librarian to see what is going on in the rest of the library, said Mrs. Sasser.

"I don't mind people seeing me at work," she said. "Sitting right here, I can see people coming in the front door, what's going on in circulation and watch activities in the children's room."

A reception area and board room near the librarian's office will be used for board meetings as well as some community activities.

Pillars in the library are situated on 20-foot squares, allowing each square to be heated and cooled separately.

On moderate days, air conditioning and heating may not be needed in the interior spaces, said Mrs. Sasser.

The adult learning and community room is one of the most interesting aspects of the building, said Mrs. Sasser.

Containing 125 chairs, a rear projection screen and coffee area, with room for art exhibits, the area opens off the stairs from the west portico on the second floor.

In the evenings, when library staff would not ordinarily be on duty, the room and stairs can be locked off from the library and may be used by community groups without necessitating the presence of library personnel, said Mrs. Sasser.

The rest of the second floor will house stacks, art for checkouts, areas for the blind and physically handicapped, soundproof booths for listening and recording and the audiovisual office.

Viewing screens and chairs will permit art patrons to view a variety of art from their chairs before selecting paintings to check out.

Community music groups are planning to use areas of the library for recitals and are hoping to move in their own piano, although one will be provided in the exhibit area, Mrs. Sasser said.

The building, with elevators and wide entrances, is fully accessible to the handicapped.

Ralston told of a telephone call he received from a handicapped girl when plans for the building were first announced.

"She said, 'is it going to be accessible to the handicapped?' I said yes, there are going to be ramps all over the place. She started to cry and said, "Mr. Ralston, I've never been able to go to the library before'"
