A photo of the Weaver Branch Library with a mother and two children leaving the library.
By late 1959, the idea of building a new segregated branch libray for African American patrons was being regarded as the best way to provide library service to this community. City of Tuscaloosa purchased the property for the location of the Weaver Branch at 2937 19th Street in early 1960. The $29,446 facility opened on December 12, 1960 and was dedicated on February 12, 1961 as the Weaver Branch.

Description
An account of the resource
A photograph of students at Bethel School enjoying a visit of the Tuscaloosa Public Library Bookmobile.
One out of 33 - The Bookmobile visits 33 schools in the county and 17 adult stations each month. This picture, taken at Bethel School, shows a flock of young students as they rushed to help their teachers select the books that would be kept at their school for a month. The Bookmobile does not furnish textbooks, but contains lots of supplementary material that will assist the students in their courses. Of course, it carries books that are just for pleasure reading, too.

Library Opens Book Station For Use Of Rosedal Courts

The first new book station within the city limits opened last night at the community hall of Rosedale Courts, Miss Barbara Davis, librarian of Tuscaloosa County Library announced today. Sponsored by the 600 Club of Rosedale Courts, the service will be limited to persons living in the apartments.

Mrs. Peggy Freeman will serve as librarian and Miss Visian Booth, as assistant librarian, with 500 books shelved in the station. Hours are to be 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays, and from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, with special attention given to children on these days.

The new station was made possible by the club, following popular demand for books by members, and is another step by the County Library to take books to the readers in an effort to further relieve the crowded condition at the library, Miss Davis said. Around 160 families will be accomodated by the new station.

Other such stations are located over the county on the routes covered by the Bookmobile, but this is the first station set up within the city limits, and may mark the beginning of other such stations, Miss Davis said. Club members built and painted the shelves in the community hall.

Bookmobile Gets 'New Look'

The Tuscaloosa County Bookmobile looks almost new now, thanks to the overhauling and painting job completed recently by the Board of Education, Miss Barbara Davis, librarian said yesterday. Funds amounting to around $500 were used to get the library on wheels in prime condition to travel over the roads and highways of the county.

A new roof, new shelves, locks, lights, and a coat of green paint have made it shine. A new Civitan sign has been repainted on the doors, to complete the decoration. The Civitan Club in collaboraion with the Board of Education has been responsible for the Bookmobile, Civitan members buying the truck, with the Board of Education purchasing the body and shelves, Miss Davis said.

The Bookmobile is responsible for carrying necessary books to schools over the county so the Board of Education buys the books and pays the driver, Mrs. B. O. Bounds. Miss Mary Guy is bookmobile librarian, and her salary is paid by the Library Board.

The Bookmobile covers schools and communities throughout the county and will stop along the way between regular stations, Miss Davis said.

Photograph caption:
THE NEW - Members of the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club are shown above as they prepared to inspect the new Tuscaloosa County Bookmobile Friday. The Civitans provided $1,320 to buy a chasis for the unit, the County Board of Education bought the body, and the books are supplied through the Tuscaloosa County Library. The new bookmobile has just been completed and will begin its schedule next week. Shown from left to right above are, George Van Tassel, Charlie Gross, Col. L. P. Hodnette, James Money, W. E. Hobson, Harvey Edwards, Jr., Civitan president, Dr. Kermit Johnson, county superintendent of education, and Miss Barbara Davis, county librarian. In the back row are J. M. Mercalf and Harvey Edwards, Sr. The Civitan emblem can be seen on the bookmobile door betwee Mr. Edwards and Dr. Johnson. (Photos by Bruce Jetton)

Text of article:
Civitans Mark Dream's End in New Bookmobile

The Tuscaloosa Civitan Club had the opportunity Friday to see some tangible results of its work. Members saw and inspected two bookmobile units which they helped Tuscaloosa County get.

When the Civitans gathered at the McLester Hotel for their regular weekly meeting Friday, they saw two bookmobile units parked in front of the building. One was the old truck which they helped to start in 1948 with the County board of education and the Tuscaloosa County Library. The other was a bigger, new truck for which they bought the chassis this year.

The county board of education bought the body for the new bookmobile and the books are supplied through the Tuscaloosa County Library. It will make the rounds of all white county schools and provide books for thousands of students and adults each year.

Miss Barbara Davis, county librarian, told the Civitans that 77,900 books were distributed from the bookmobile in 1948, the first year it was started. During 1953 there were 197,366 books distributed from the bookmobile.

Miss Davis and Dr. Kermit Johnson, county superintendent of education told the club the bookmobile has very definitely raised the reading standard of hundreds of county youths and adults.

The old bookmobile is not being retired, but has been put to use by the County Board of Education to serve the Negro population of the county. The Board of Education bought books for the Negro bookmobile and one of the buildings at Lock 11 will be used as a library center for it.

Mrs. Carolyn Watts, supervisor of instruction for Negro schools, said that only about 1,000 books are available now. The truck will hold over 2,000 books and they hope to add to the supply, she said.

Before the bookmobile was turned over to the Negroes, Mrs. Watts carried books to the rural schools and communities in the trunk of her car. She could only carry a limited number and the children had to share the books among themselves. Now a child can check out a book and keep it himself until the bookmobile returns.

The new bookmobile is painted a dark blue and both have the Civitan emblem painted on the doors. Both will also begin their new schedule next week.
