It survived the Great Depression and boomed during WWII and the Korean War. In the early 1980s, the foundry closed due to bankruptcy. The Central Foundry manufactured cast iron pipe for water and gas service, cast iron soil pipe, fittings used for plumbing and drain purposes, and brake shoes for railroad locomotives and cars. The foundry had three locations, the largest being in Tuscaloosa, and was the first large manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa. The Central Coal and Iron Co. of South Pittsburg, TN, found land near Tuscaloosa and named its site and company village after one of its officers, Frank Holt. Coal for the foundry came from Kellerman. The firm built a company store, recreation center, a hotel, and residences for its workers, in what was described as a "model industrial community." When the city acquired the old Kaul Lumber Company property in the early 1950s, it inherited a sawmill town where some people had lived for years in sub-standard housing. In the 1960s the city moved the people of Kaulton and razed many buildings and "shotgun" houses. Part of the commissary is still standing as well as the office; these can be seen in the second photograph. Some of the houses in the first photograph are still standing on Pine Street behind Kaulton Park. Title A name given to the resource Parker Towing Company Propeller, The Parker Wheel Subject The topic of the resource Towing Propellers Parker, Tim Sr., 1904-1992 Description An account of the resource Photograph of the propeller developed by Tim Parker for his towing boats and the description accompanying the display at Parker Towing Company in Northport. <br /><br />Text of the sign: <br /><br />The Parker Wheel <br /><br />Parker Towing Company founder, Captain Tim Parker (1904-1992), began his career on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee River working on and later piloting paddlewheel steamboats. In 1946 he built his first diesel powered, propeller driven boat, M/V R.G. Parker. After putting it into service, he discovered the propellers or “wheels” available at that time were designed primarily for pushing ahead and did not provide sufficient thrust when the boat was in reverse or “backing”. <br /><br />With his years of experience piloting paddle wheelers, he knew how critical “backing” was to safely navigate the narrow bends between Tuscaloosa and Mobile. Captain Parker worked with a propeller manufacturer in Mobile, Alabama to design a propeller to increase its thrust in reverse or “backing”. That propeller design became known as the “Parker Wheel”. <br /><br />The propeller on display here is of that design. It was used on the M/V Dallas, a diesel powered, twin propeller driven towboat owned by Parker Towing Company and operated for many years moving barges on rivers throughout the southeast. This propeller is made of bronze and is 72 inches in diameter with a pitch of 67 inches, manufactured by Doran Alabama Propeller Company.
