Description
An account of the resource
The East End Elementary School was built in 1962 in a predominately black residential area near the Jaycee Park in Alberta. In 1969, the court ordered the closing of the all-black school. Most of its students transferred to Alberta Elementary School. As part of the a later review by the courts of the desegregation of the city schools, the East End School was to be reopened in 1970.
In 1972, the City School Board approved a contract to add a library, three classrooms and a principal's office.
In 1980, the Board considered closing the school along with several others due to financial problems and the small size of the enrollment - less than 200 students. The school closed at the end of the 1980-81 school year.

Whilldin, D.O. (David Oliver), 1881-1970
Description
An account of the resource
The Echola School in the west Tuscaloosa County community of Echola was a five room schoolhouse built in 1921. Although the documentation is fragmentary, this building was probably designed by D. O. Whilldin as part of a building program undertaken by the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. W.M. White was the first principal. Teachers often had two or more grades in one room. Students in grades 1 through 11 were taught, but had to transfer to other schools, usually Tuscaloosa County High or Gordo High School, to graduate.
The building ceased to be used for educational purposes in 1950.
In 1976, as part of a bicentennial project, the Echola community chose to restore the school and use it as a community center, leaving one room as an exhibit of how the classrooms would have looked in the 1920s.
A fire of undetermined origin left the building unsafe, leading to its demolition in 2010.

Description
An account of the resource
Named after General William Gorgas, Gorgas Elementary School was located in northern Tuscaloosa County, on land donated by Isaac Morgan Boone. It was the first graded school in rural Tuscaloosa County (succeeded one-room schoolhouses). It later became Gorgas High School and was closed in 1957 when it became an elementary school again. The building was left vacant in the 60's when the students were tranferred to newly built, Walker Elementary School.
The building burned down in the 70's.
Children identified in the photo are T.W. Clements (with #2 on his sleeve), the boy to his left is Wyman "Buster" Shirley, the girl behind Clements is Juanita Jones (later Juanita Jones Dunn Barger).
This photo appeared on the cover of "They Live on the Land" by Paul W. Terry and Verner M. Sims, a study of rural life written during the 1930's.

Palmore, Ernest, 1917-2010
Description
An account of the resource
Ernest Palmore was a longtime agriculture educator in Tuscaloosa County.
He was born Oct. 2, 1917, in Richland, Georgia and
was raised by his mother, who cleaned homes for white families, and his grandmother, who was a former slave. His father left the family when Palmore was young.
In the late 1930s, Palmore left home to attend Tuskegee University, graduating in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and, two years later, a master’s degree in agribusiness.
In 1941, he moved to Northport to teach agriculture at Tuscaloosa County Training School for Negroes, where he taught for 14 years before becoming an agriculture teacher at the blacks-only Riverside High School. After 14 years, public schools were desegregated and Palmore was transferred to Tuscaloosa County High School. He retired in 1982, after 38 years in agriculture education.
In 1973, he built a house with his own hands on Lake Tuscaloosa, becoming one of the first blacks to own a home in that area. He was one of the first members of Tuscaloosa’s Delta Phi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., a 33rd-degree Freemason, a former chair of the deacon board at First Baptist Church in Northport, a former chair of the board of directors at Maude L. Whatley Health Center, and a member of the Kiwanis Club where the Ernest Palmore Academic Scholarship was created in his honor in 2008, the same year he was named Kiwanis Club Man of the Year. The Ernest Palmore Crusaders Choir at First Baptist Church is also named for him.
