Description An account of the resource IIn 1886, the U. S. Congress authorized constructing three locks overcoming the Tuscaloosa Falls, a series of rock rapids falling 25 feet in about two miles. Locks 1, 2, and 3 opened on January 12, 1896. To facilitate coal shipment, the River and Harbor Acts of 1902 and 1907 authorized various improvements to the Black Warrior and lower Tombigbee Rivers creating 17 locks and dams to provide navigation from the Port of Mobile to near Birmingham, AL. Locks 1, 2, and 3 were renamed 10, 11, and 12. The entire lock system was completely built by 1915. Lock 12 was located across from the entrance to the University of Alabama on Jack Warner Parkway at The Park at Manderson Landing. Title A name given to the resource Brookwood Covered Bridge Subject The topic of the resource Covered bridges Description An account of the resource This covered bridge was located about 5 miles south of Brookwood, Ala., on Covered Bridge Road. It was thought to built about 1850 and was destroyed by fire in 1962. It was the last covered bridge in Tuscaloosa County. The bridge was constructed of heavy pine timbers put together by wooden pegs. The roof was of tin with nails, put there about 1945 when re-roofing was ordered by the Tuscaloosa County Board of Revenue. The board said the old bridge should be preserved as long as possible as a historical landmark in the county. The bridge stood about 50 feet over the waters of Hurricane Creek, supported by creosoted logs, part of them resting on an abridgement of solid rock. The bridge spanned 200 feet, with the covered portion 100 feet long. In an article in The Tuscaloosa News on Feb. 6, 1955, writer Bob Kyle said bridges like this one were used extensively in olden times when houses and towns were few and far between. The covered bridges provided wagon travelers places where they could spend nights out of the cold and rain. The bridge survived in good shape even when it was bypassed when the road was paved in 1957 and a new concrete and steel bridge built and the covered bridge was closed to traffic. The members of the Alabama Federation of Garden Clubs agreed to maintain and preserve the historic landmark. Dates before the Civil War were carved into the walls with lovers' initials and Cupid's hearts. Looking Back, Tuscaloosa News, August 21, 2017 In June of 1962, the bridge burned with arson suspected. By the time firefighters arrived, the middle section of the bridge had collapsed into Hurricane Creek. Ten University of Alabama students admitted they were possibly responsible for the fire; they said they had been picnicking and built a fire on the end of the bridge, but thought they had put out the fire before leaving. With no evidence to indicate any intent to burn the bridge, Circuit Solicitor Fred Nichol indicated that no criminal charges would be filed. Title A name given to the resource Tuscaloosa Trolley, 1941 Subject The topic of the resource Trolley buses Description An account of the resource Electric streetcars like the ones pictured were first used in Tuscaloosa in February of 1915, and superseded the old steam locomotive known as the "dummy line." Streetcar service began in 1883 with the arrival of the town’s first horsecar trolley. Operated by the Tuskaloosa Street Railway, streetcars were pulled on rail by mules and mustangs. The steam dummy train began operation in 1888 by the Tuskaloosa Belt Railway. There’s an overlap of about 8 years in which the dummy and the horsecar trolley were both in use. The horsecar trolley was no longer needed in the late 1890s when the dummy line was extended to Riverview. "The Dummy" operated until 1915 when the street rail was electrified. In 1923, the Tuscaloosa Railway and Utilities Company sold the electric trolley line to Alabama Power Company for $1.1 million. In 1941, most electric streetcars were pulled offline during the transition to a bus system operated by the power company. All passenger service ceased in 1942.
