Title A name given to the resource Tuscaloosa Trolley, circa 1945 Subject The topic of the resource Trolley buses Description An account of the resource The streetcar stops at the corner of Broad Street (now University Boulevard) and Greensboro Avenue in front of Brown's Dollar Store that later became Brown's Department Store. Streetcar service began in 1883 with the arrival of the town’s first horsecar trolley. Operated by the Tuskaloosa Street Railway, streetcars were pulled on rail by mules and mustangs. The steam dummy train began operation in 1888 by the Tuskaloosa Belt Railway. There’s an overlap of about 8 years in which the dummy and the horsecar trolley were both in use. The horsecar trolley was no longer needed in the late 1890s when the dummy line was extended to Riverview. "The Dummy" operated until 1915 when the street rail was electrified. In 1923, the Tuscaloosa Railway and Utilities Company sold the electric trolley line to Alabama Power Company for $1.1 million. In 1941, most electric streetcars were pulled offline during the transition to a bus system operated by the power company. All passenger service ceased in 1942. In 1886, the U. S. Congress authorized constructing three locks overcoming the Tuscaloosa Falls, a series of rock rapids falling 25 feet in about two miles. Locks 1, 2, and 3 opened on January 12, 1896. To facilitate coal shipment, the River and Harbor Acts of 1902 and 1907 authorized various improvements to the Black Warrior and lower Tombigbee Rivers creating 17 locks and dams to provide navigation from the Port of Mobile to near Birmingham, AL. Locks 1, 2, and 3 were renamed 10, 11, and 12. The entire lock system was completely built by 1915. Lock 12 was located across from the entrance to the University of Alabama on Jack Warner Parkway at The Park at Manderson Landing. Railroads Trestles Mobile and Ohio Railroad Company Description An account of the resource The Mobile & Ohio (M&O) Railroad trestle is a wooden and steel truss bridge that was constructed across the Black Warrior River in Tuscaloosa for the M&O Railroad in 1898. Civil engineer Benjamin Hardaway, an 1887 graduate of the University of Alabama and former Tuscaloosa city engineer, designed the trestle. Originally 135 feet high with a 110 ft. clearance, it was once considered by many to be the country's longest trestle at 3600 feet. The designed included a passage for steamboats. The M & O ran between Columbus, Miss., and Montgomery. Until the M & O arrived, the Alabama and Chattanooga (known after 1878 as the Alabama Great Southern or AGS) was the area’s only railroad link. Description An account of the resource The drawbridge across the Black Warrior River at dusk. The drawbridge that connected Northport and Tuscaloosa was built in 1922 at a cost of about $200,000 and was the sixth bridge built over the Black Warrior River at Tuscaloosa. S.P. "Bill" Faucett, of Northport, was the first motorist to cross the new structure. The draw span lifted for boat passage, but often, according to an article from The Tuscaloosa News on June 6, 1993, its supposedly delicately balanced weights often jammed and kept motorists waiting until workmen could realign the draw. The drawbridge was replaced by the Hugh Thomas Bridge in 1972 and it was demolished shortly thereafter.
