Prior to that time, Tuscaloosa had had a number of privately owned and managed hospitals. The movement for this new hospital began in 1919 when a group of Tuscaloosa physicians interested in seeing the city equipped with thorough hospital facilities called together a number of citizens and held a conference at which the ways and means of a new hospital were brought up. The result was the formation of a committee to investigate thoroughly the local situation and to report on the matter. S.F. Clabaugh was named chairman of the committee. E. I. Clarkson, Hugo Friedman, Charles Morris, F. M. Moody, F. J. Stevens, Dr. T.H. Patton, Dr. George R. Rau, Dr. George H. Searcy and Dr. J H. Ward were members of the committee. The committee reported to a citizens meeting around the first of 1920 that there was an urgent, desperate need for a modern, well-equipped hospital of not less than fifty beds to be erected and equipped at a cost of approximately $100,000. The committee was promised the cooperation of the Board of Trade, The Tuscaloosa County Medical Society, the Rotary Club and other civic organizations. The University gave to the City of Tuscaloosa a four-acre site with the understanding that it was leased to the hospital association for 99 years. The site was felt to be perfect. It was far enough from the city and isolated enough to be quiet. It was on the car line, near the paved street and there was assurance that the paving would be extended. Experts in hospital construction, architects and builders and operators of hospitals were all consulted on the plans for the Druid City Hospital. Every modern improvement and convenience was given a place in the plans for the new building and duly considered by the architect, D.O. Whildin. The building required a year to construct. An article in The Tuscaloosa News and Times Gazette on March 27, 1923, describes the modern equipment provided for the hospital. Title A name given to the resource Dr. Rufus Cornelius Partlow, Sr., 1885-1975 Subject The topic of the resource Physician Mental health facilities Description An account of the resource Dr. Rufus Cornelius Partlow Sr. was born in 1885 in St. Clair County, Partlow and his older brother, W.D. (William Dempsey) Partlow grew up on a farm and left to attend medical school. Both interned at Bryce Hospital and spent their careers treating the patients at state mental institutions and administering the hospitals. Dr. R.C. Partlow graduated from the Birmingham Medical College in 1912 and began his service with the Bryce Hospital eight days later as a staff physician, interning under his brother and Dr. James T. Searcy. He served a total of 30 years at Bryce Hospital, two years at Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, and 21 years as assistant superintendent of Partlow State School. In 1965, Dr. R. C. Partlow Sr. retired after a 53 years of continued service with Alabama State Hospitals. When R.C. Partlow joined the staff of Bryce Hospital in 1912, the patient population was 1,600; it was 5,100 in 1965. When he became assistant superintendent of Partlow State School and Hospital in 1944, the population was 800. At his retirement it was 2,200 – 600 more than comfortable capacity, and there were 460 children on the waiting list. For the first eight years of his service at Partlow, Dr. Partlow was the only physician and was on call 24 hours a day. As assistant superintendent, Partlow was in charge of running the facility. The two children of Dr. R.C. Partlow and his wife, the former Nancy Ervin Dominick, were Rufus Partlow Jr. and Louise Partlow Hill; both were born and raised on the Bryce campus. Dr. R.C. Partlow was certified by the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry in 1932. He was a life member of the Southern Medical Association, a fellow and past counselor of the American Association of Mental Deficiency, a past president and fellow in the Alabama Academy of Neurology and Psychiatry and a member of the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club. In 1975, Dr. R.C. Partlow died at 90 years of age. His brother, Dr. W.D. Partlow preceded him in death; he died in 1953 at 76 years of age. Bryce was born in 1834 in Columbia, South Carolina. At the age of 17 he entered the South Carolina Military Academy (the Citadel) at Charleston, graduating in 1855 with honors. For two years he read medicine with Dr. Samuel Fair and then entered the Medical Department of the University of New York. In 1860, Bryce was elected superintendent of the Insane Hospital that was under construction in Tuscaloosa. Bryce won national recognition by his humane methods of treating the mentally ill. He abolished the practice of using handcuffs and strait jackets to restrain patients. Bryce married Ellen Clarkson from South Carolina in 1860. He was 26; she was 19. They came immediately to Tuscaloosa. The Bryces lived in an apartment in the administration building of the hospital. They had no children of their own but raised the three children of Ellen Bryce's brother when his wife died. Davis, 1893 - 1960 Subject The topic of the resource Physicians Description An account of the resource Dr. Lewis Davis, the only physician in the small town of Gordo, Alabama, at the time, died in 1960. “Dr. Lewis,” as he was called, delivered more than 5,000 babies, most in homes, during his 45 years of practicing medicine. Dr. Lewis was the son and grandson of doctors. His grandfather, Dr. Daniel Puckett Davis moved to Pickens County in 1856 where he practiced medicine until 1873. He rode horseback to see his patients and while returning home, his horse threw him on a stump, causing his death several days later. He left his wife and sons 1,800 acres of land, which included all of the town of Gordo. Dr. J.L. Davis, Dr. Lewis’ father, graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1891 and practiced medicine in Gordo until 1924 when he retired, and Dr. Lewis took over the practice. The three generations practiced in Gordo continuously for more than 100 years.
