The business grew steadily through the 1960s and 1970s, but when the McFarland Mall opened south of the city in 1969, many downtown businesses went there. The number of jewelers in Tuscaloosa doubled almost overnight. In 1980, the University Mall opened, bringing increased competition. The area became known as “Socktown.” It employed 200 men and women in the production of hose and socks. At the time, the hosiery mill was the only factory in Tuscaloosa that employed women. Children as young as 10 years old could be employed, but a company rule said they had to attend school at least three months each school year until they reached 12 years of age. After laws were passed regarding employment of children, inspectors came around to see if any child was working. If so, it was said that the supervisors would hide them in bins of socks until it was safe to come out. This advertisement, published in The Tuscaloosa News on Sept. 14, 1919, looked for workers, boys and girls between 16 and 20. There was a boarding house for the girls who would be taken care of by the landlady. The mill in Northport had newly opened above what is, in 2019, Anders Hardware. The company also had a Cottondale plant. In 1924, the Tuscaloosa factory burned and was never rebuilt. Title A name given to the resource H&W Drug Company Soda Bar Subject The topic of the resource Drugstores Description An account of the resource H&amp;W Drugs was located in the Alston Building on corner of Greenboro Avenue and 6th Street. It was opened in 1916 by two men whose names were Hanson and Williams. <br /><br />The drugstore had a popular soda fountain where many University of Alabama students stopped for a soda after going to the movies at the Bama Theatre, the Druid or the Ritz. The soda fountain closed in 1972. <br /><br />When the Alston Building was renovated in 1984, the drugstore moved down 6th Street. In 2008, the store was sold to Rite Aid which took the inventory and customer information and closed the downtown store. <br /><br />H&amp;W was the last downtown drugstore to close. At one time there had been six pharmacies within a three-block area downtown.
