The business grew steadily through the 1960s and 1970s, but when the McFarland Mall opened south of the city in 1969, many downtown businesses went there. The number of jewelers in Tuscaloosa doubled almost overnight. In 1980, the University Mall opened, bringing increased competition. It was opened in 1916 by two men whose names were Hanson and Williams. <br /><br />The drugstore had a popular soda fountain where many University of Alabama students stopped for a soda after going to the movies at the Bama Theatre, the Druid or the Ritz. The soda fountain closed in 1972. <br /><br />When the Alston Building was renovated in 1984, the drugstore moved down 6th Street. In 2008, the store was sold to Rite Aid which took the inventory and customer information and closed the downtown store. <br /><br />H&amp;W was the last downtown drugstore to close. At one time there had been six pharmacies within a three-block area downtown. Title A name given to the resource Fund-Raising for Hotel Stafford, circa 1954 Subject The topic of the resource Hotels Description An account of the resource This sign in front of the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse tracked donations or investments for a new hotel in Tuscaloosa that would become Hotel Stafford. The hotel opened in 1956 with the finest accommodations in Tuscaloosa. Hayse Tucker was chairman of the executive committee and he was assisted by civic leaders who thought it was their duty to bring a hotel to downtown Tuscaloosa. The hotel was built on the corner of 9th Street and 22nd Avenue , a site where, about 1830, the Tuscaloosa Female Academy was built. Later, in 1885, that building housed the Stafford School, Tuscaloosa's first public school. The hotel's demise began in the 1960s when motels and hotels opened on the outskirts of Tuscaloosa. A renovation was undertaken, but the building of the Sheraton Hotel near the University of Alabama was the death knell for the hotel. It was sold, but investors did not recoup their investments.
