According to Jerry Belk, one of the team members, only he and two others survive in 2017.: Cecil “Hootie” Ingram and Jimmy Harrison Jr. Jerry Belk described the summer of 1949 as the best one of his life. World War II had just ended, and people didn’t have much, but the boys had “a little white ball” according to Belk. There was camaraderie among the boys on the team that lasted for their lifetimes. Belk says the remaining three still get together. The team was composed of gifted, intelligent and ambitious young men. Jimmy Harrison Jr., who pitched almost every game, became an owner of Harco Drug store. Walter Flowers became a congressman. Belk described Jack Smalley, left fielder, as probably the best all-around athlete who went on to play football for Alabama for two years and become a football coach. “Hootie” Ingram became director of athletics at Alabama. Jimmy Walker became a preacher. Belk, himself, was a teacher and coach at Holt High School and director of Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation for 31 years. The team had a great coach, Billy Henderson. The team played and practiced at Veteran’s Field, behind the Veterans Administration Hospital. Veterans who were able came out to watch the team practice and play. The joke that Belk attributed to “Hootie” Ingram was that their team had more people at their practices than the teams they played had in their towns. The team won the State Championship though they were beat out in the regionals, the first time a Tuscaloosa team had won the State. Langford offered to bring the team to Tuscaloosa, but Bryant said, “Oh, no. I’ll travel to meet champions!” He came to Akron and shook hands with all the players and gave them a flag and football. Hubert Colvin was on the A team that was not in the photo but said he was so excited to meet Coach Bryant and shake his hand that he thought he would never wash his hands again. This photo was in Coach Bryant's personal collection which was donated to the Bryant Museum. I remember, even though I was a tiny girl, that my daddy took me to ride on the very first trip of the dummy, which was mule drawn and driven by Bill Brandon, who later was to become Governor of Alabama. I remember our one recreation spot in my younger days was Lake Lorraine, which was located about a half mile east of Bryce Hospital station, and south of the dummy line. This was long before the Riverview Park was established. Lake Lorraine was a wonderful place to go on a Sunday afternoon. There we would watch the courting guys and gals as they rowed in the boats that were available at the lakeside. Most of the men wore sleeve holders to keep their shirt sleeves up, a derby hat, and a handle-bar mustache. The ladies usually wore black skirts, with white shirtwaists with collars so high you could understand why ladies didn't spit. Stays in these collars ran up almost to their ears. They either wore pretty merry widow hats or went bareheaded with a huge rat around the crown of the head with the hair pulled up over it. (Not too different from some of the teased styles of today). The orchestra would always play concerts at the lake on Sundays. It also played for the dances at the pavilion there. I remember how frightened I was as a child to ride the dummy over the trestle at Pinehurst and University Avenue, which spanned the huge gully running into what is now Audubon Place and see the horses and carriages or mules and wagons go down under, down one side and up the other.
