The gallery was owned by W.J. (Bill) Townsend, shown on the left, and thrived around 1915, but was forced to close in 1917 when World War I caused the cost of ammunition to go too high. Bill was one of the best shots with a rifle around then and men and boys spent many afternoons and nights trying to out-shoot him. Bill died in 1942. The oldest of Bill's sons, Dewey Townsend, is on the right. Dewey retired after 36 years with the post office. At the time of his retirement, he was superintendent of mails at what was then the new Southside station in Tuscaloosa. According to one marker: In 1926, the city of Tuscaloosa acquired 30 acres of land for a public park that would become Queen City Park. During the 1930's the Federal Works Project Administration (WPA) built a nature walk at Queen City Park. In 1943, the city of Tuscaloosa built Queen City Pool and Bath House with funds from the Warner Family's David Warner Foundation and the work was provided by the WPA. Queen City Pool's bathouse {sic} and fountain were designed in the art deco style by Tuscaloosa architect Don Buel Schuyler who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. The pool and bath house were designed by Don Buel Schuyler, an apprentice to architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and were constructed as a WPA project during the Great Depression. The pool was used from 1943 to 1989. The pool was filled in with dirt in 2002 and the bath house was converted to become the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum in 2011. The structure was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1992 for its architectural and historical significance. Burnum led the Black Bears to an undefeated record, five state championships and four national championship during his five-year tenure there. Burnum went on to coach multiple sports at the University of Alabama. After his death in 1981 he was elected posthumously to the Alabama Football Hall of Fame. Team manager Rainy Collins went on to become a mayor of the city of Tuscaloosa.
