Coach Paul Burnum had his boys ready when the Northern team came to Tuscaloosa, demanding a gut-wrenching effort from every player. An unseasonably hot December was a point in the team's favor. Coach Burnum played his Confederate card, giving a legendary speech about revenging Grandpa's honor. Coach Burnum had also arranged for the sweethearts of some Tuscaloosa players to be hostesses to the Chicago players; some were seen walking down the halls holding hands. Burnam mentioned that some of those Yankee intruders were out to defile Southern womanhood yet again. The team swarmed onto the field, scoring their first touchdown just two minutes into the game when Dwight Deal intercepted a pass and ran 45 yards. Title A name given to the resource Shooting Gallery, circa 1915 Subject The topic of the resource Shooting Description An account of the resource According to information on the back of the photo, probably written by Fred Maxwell, this shooting gallery was located on 7th Street between 23rd Avenue and Greensboro Avenue. The gallery was owned by W.J. (Bill) Townsend, shown on the left, and thrived around 1915, but was forced to close in 1917 when World War I caused the cost of ammunition to go too high. Bill was one of the best shots with a rifle around then and men and boys spent many afternoons and nights trying to out-shoot him. Bill died in 1942. The oldest of Bill's sons, Dewey Townsend, is on the right. Dewey retired after 36 years with the post office. At the time of his retirement, he was superintendent of mails at what was then the new Southside station in Tuscaloosa. The team lost their first game in 1947 to Hole, 66-0. Their first win came in their second season against Palmetto. The coach for the team was Johnny Hall. Ettecca School was five miles north of the present (2014) Northside High School at the intersection of what was then Byler Road (now U.S. 43) and Concord Road (now County Road 12) in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. The school was build in 1927 on land donated by Morgan P.and Mamie Cannon. The school closed in 1967. The pool and bath house were designed by Don Buel Schuyler, an apprentice to architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and were constructed as a WPA project during the Great Depression. The pool was used from 1943 to 1989. The pool was filled in with dirt in 2002 and the bath house was converted to become the Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum in 2011.
