Description

Thomas P. Shumaker was a longtime Tuscaloosa businessman, community champion, military veteran and the city's 1979 Citizen of the Year.

Shumaker was born in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated from high school when he was 14. He graduated from the University of Alabama with an honors degree in chemistry, metallurgy, and ceramics.

He held various positions at Reichhold Chemicals Inc., including general manager. He also served on the company's board of directors.

Shumaker was a board member of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, chairman of the Tuscaloosa Civic Center Commission, president of the Police Advisory committee, and co-chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality.

He also served as a board member for the YMCA , Tuscaloosa Public Library, West Alabama Regional Council, and the Warrior-Tombigbee Development Association. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II and in the forces' reserve until he retired as a lieutenant colonel.

His friend, Tuscaloosa Mayor Al Dupont, described Shumaker as "a friend of Tuscaloosa and of the community."
