Description
Fred W. Nicol served as Tuscaloosa County Circuit Judge for nearly four decades of public service. Nicol, known as the singing and whistling judge, retired in October 1982 as the senior elected official in the courthouse after more than 30 years as a judge, circuit solicitor and assistant state prosecutor and after nearly 10 prior years as a agent with the FBI and in military intelligence.
He was found dead in the Canyon Lake subdivision which he had developed. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He had been in ill health for several months following his retirement.
He was married to Rachel Cabaniss Nicol and had one son, Robert, and two daughters, Dorothy and Nancy.
