Willis E. Penfield, civic leader and retired vice president of Gulf States Paper, was elected a director for the company whose production operation he headed many years.
Penfield was a second generation executive with Gulf States Paper. His first experience in the paper industry was as a boy when he worked summers in the New York Bag factory, managed by his father. When the company's operations were consolidated in Tuscaloosa, his father was named vice president for production.
Penfield served in World War I, and afterwards, he attended college for a degree in mechanical engineering at Cornell University before joining Gulf States (then the E-Z Open Bag Company) at the Braithwaite, La., paper mill where he was manager when the move to Tuscaloosa was made.
In Tuscaloosa Penfield was active in many phases of civic life. He is a former president of the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce and of the board of Trustees for Druid City Hospital; he was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a Rotarian and a director of First Federal Savings and Loan, among other activities in the community.
