Herbert Warner moved to Tuscaloosa in 1928 from Decatur, Illinois where he was the secretary-treasurer of the E-Z Opener Bag Company. E-Z Opener was Gulf States Paper Corporation's parent company. He served as treasure, chairman of the board until his retirement in 1957, and then chairman emeritus of the Gulf States Paper Corporation.
A little-known fact about Herb Warner is that he is a member of the Indiana, Illinois, and Alabama Bar Associations, having graduated in 1906 from the University of Michigan Law School.
Warner had a University of Alabama law professorship named in his honor in 1966.
He was once the president and director of the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club, Druid City Hospital, and the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce, as well as an active director of the Tuscaloosa YMCA and supporter of the Boy Scouts.
Warner was awarded Citizen of the Year in 1970 by the Tuscaloosa Civitan Club and the Community Builder Award by the Home Builders Association of Tuscaloosa just two years before. He and his wife, Mildred, were named "Pillars of the Community" by the Community Foundation of West Alabama in 2013.
On July 17,1915 he married Mildred Westervelt Warner. They had four children, David Warner who died at 15 in a swimming accident, Jack Warner, Helene Warner Hibbard, and Joan Warner Van Zele.
