Camille Wright Cook was the first tenured female member of the faculty in the University of Alabama School of Law in 1976 and became the first woman to hold an endowed chair in 1992 when she was named the John S. Stone Chair of Law.
Cook was a 1948 graduate of the college and served as an assistant professor from 1948 to 1968 at Auburn University. She returned to the University of Alabama and worked for 24 years before retiring in 1993. Her awards included UA's Distinguished Alumna Award, UA's Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award, the Award of Special Merit from the American Law Institute, and the Walter P. Gewin Award for Outstanding Service to Continuing Legal Education, the Award of Merit from the Alabama State Bar, and the Sam W. Pipes Distinguished Alumna Award from the School of Law. The plaza in front of the college is named in her honor.
In 2009, Cook was named one of the Pillars of West Alabama, an annual honor bestowed by the Community Foundation of West Alabama. The Pillars program honors people whose impact and influence had made a significant and lasting difference in the development and quality of life in West Alabama.
Cook was born April 14, 1925, in Tuscaloosa, the daughter of Judge Reuben Hall Wright and Camille Searcy Wright. She died Feb. 20, 2018.
