Coxswain J.C. Coggins was killed on October 24, 1944 when his ship the USS Samuel B. Roberts was sunk off the coast of Samar. Coxswain Coggins' name can be found on the list of those whose remains were not recovered at the end of World War II at this site: http://www.dpaa.mil/portals/85/Documents/WWIIAccounting/alabama.html.
According to the book Blocton: A History of an Alabama Coal Mining Town by Carl Adams, Coggins' father once lived on Smith Hill in West Blocton.
