Pvt. Newell C. McAteer was killed on February 3, 1943 when his ship the USAT Dorchester was sunk by a German U-Boat off the coast of Greenland. Pvt. McAteer is listed on a memorial to those who died at sea in the Western Atlantic in Battery Park, New York. A photo of that memorial can be found at this site:
