Fireman 1st Class James L. Carpenter died on February 18, 1942, when his ship the USS Truxtun sank in the North Atlantic. Carpenter was the son of R.C. Carpenter of Eutaw. A tribute to Fireman Carpenter can be found in the book Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church 1832-1910.
