Bernice Hudson Washington is commissioner of the Tuscaloosa Housing Authority and worked in mental health for 45 years.
Washington helped launch a spousal abuse program and a Grandparents Unite program in Tuscaloosa, as well as the Bernice Hudson Washington Insight Center, which provides community outreach, drug prevention and intervention services. At Crescent East housing complex, she established the Channel One program for children.
She is also a recipient of the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award. The Housing Authority named a new development near McKenzie Court the Bernice Hudson Washington Estates in her honor.
Washington was named a 2012 Pillar of the Community by the Community Foundation of West Alabama and was also named to the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame in 2012.
