Description
Cottondale Church of Christ was the Tuscaloosa News Feature Church on June 19, 1970.
"In 1947, H.A. Dixon, the minister of the Central Church of Christ and student at the University of Alabama, preached the Gospel of Christ over a local radio station in the hearing of Mrs. Manie Englebert. Aunt Manie, as she is affectionately called by many, was Baptized into Christ fot the remission of her sins on September 8, 1947. For the next five years several people congregated in the home of Aunt Manie each Lord's Day to worship. In, or about 1953, with the growth of ten members, the first phase of construction was begun on the church building. Thus, the Cottondale Church of Christ had its beginning.
Since that time the church has experienced considerable growth numerically as well as two additions to its physical plant. There have been several ministers who have enjoyed many pleasant years associated with this congregation.
The Church of Christ is neither Protestant nor Catholic, having no earthly headquarters to legislate or determine any course of action for the various congregations. Its whole appeal is to "speak where the Bible speaks, and to be silent where the Bible is silent." to have a "thus saith the Lord," either in express terms or by approved precedent. Its mottos are 'No book but the Bible'; No creed but the Christ; No name but the Divine; No Plea but the Gospel; No basis of unity, but the Scriptural; In essentials, unity. In opinions, liberty. In all things, charity. The movement has grown rapidly united many people in one Body, thus making peace in the religious turmoil."
