Major Bart Avery was killed in Germany on April 6, 1945. A native of Gloversville, New York, Major Avery came to Tuscaloosa to attend the University of Alabama where he played multiple sports including baseball, football, and basketball. Major Avery's connection to Tuscaloosa was further strengthened when he married local girl Ellen Bealle Daniel.
